Astros Vs. Phillies Predictions & MLB Picks For Today (8/27)

The Phillies kicked off this inter-league series with a 3-2 win in extra innings against the Astros less than 24 hours ago. Bryce Harper hit a single in the bottom of the 10th inning, driving in Kyle Schwarber for the walk-off victory, while LHP Matt Strahm secured his sixth win of the season.

With this win, the Phillies have now secured three consecutive victories, outscoring their opponents 25-7 overall. This surge in performance is a welcome boost for Rob Thomson’s team, especially after a tough 1-4 record in their previous five games last week.

On the other hand, the Astros’ struggles continued with last night’s loss. Houston has now lost five of its last seven games, causing their lead in the AL West to shrink. Moreover, the Astros are just 4-10 SU in their last 14 games at Citizens Bank Park, highlighting the challenge of beating the Phillies on their home turf.

Despite recent results, fans can expect a pitching showdown this evening.

Astros’ RHP Justin Verlander continues to perform exceptionally well at 41. The three-time Cy Young winner has been solid on the road, posting a 2-0 record with a 2.50 ERA and 20 strikeouts over 18 innings in his last four away games. Verlander also holds a 3-0 record with a 1.42 ERA in three career starts against the Phillies, with his last victory against them coming two years ago.

On the other side, Phillies’ RHP Aaron Nola has been equally impressive, boasting a 2.16 ERA in his last four road games. The Astros might find it tough to score against him, as Nola has given up only one earned run on 15 hits over his last 12 innings, holding opponents to a .377 on-base percentage.

Similar to Verlander’s success against the Phillies, Nola is also 3-0 in his career against the Astros, having struck out 25 batters with a 0.44 ERA over 20 2/3 innings in those matchups.

It should be a fairly even meeting, however, I predict a Phillies win tonight. Not only have they been the hotter team lately, but they also have the home-field advantage on their side. The Astros are struggling to win at Citizens Bank Park and I don’t see that changing given how well Nola has pitched in Philly lately.

As for the best bet, we’ll take the Under on the 8.5-run total. The Under is 5-1 in the Astros’ last six road games (6.7 runs per game) as well as 5-0 across the last five Houston-Philadelphia matchups (5.6 runs per game). Throw in the fact that Nola and Verlander are both pitching well at home and on the road, respectively, and it’s easy to understand why we might not see a ton of offense tonight.

Best Astros Vs Phillies MLB Player Prop (8/27)

I’m backing Aaron Nola to have under 5.5 strikeouts (-130) in this game. Nola has gone under this mark in four of his last five starts, recording just 21 strikeouts over 28 2/3 innings. The Astros are averaging 7.3 strikeouts in their last seven games and only struck out eight times on Monday. Given Nola’s recent tendency to pitch only five or six innings, he may not have enough time to rack up many strikeouts. While I expect a Phillies win, Nola likely won’t have a high strikeout total.
